Project: Nightfall Concert Series 2020

About:
Nightfall is a live Summer concert series that is always free to the community. The concert series takes place in downtown Chattanooga, TN, all Summer long, jamming along for over 35 Summer seasons.

The Problem:
Every year, Nightfall gets a new identity/look. In early 2020, I was asked to be the designer for Nightfall 2020. However, 2020 was an unprecedented year due to the coronavirus, but Nightfall continued. Instead of live music in a public space, the event shifted to video streaming every Friday night during the Summer season on Facebook.

The Solution:
Nightfall is an exciting and fun event full of spirit, and I wanted the logo to reflect that. I decided to use the “N” as the main element of the logo and have it represent a sunset.

Breaking it into pieces helped capture that representation, along with the gem-tone colors of a sunset. The colors not only reflect a sunset but also the fun, lively, and energetic Summer evenings! To help illustrate the night coming to life, a cool purple was chosen, which also helps amplify the logo.

My Creative Process:
I always start by talking with the client and getting a sense of what they want by asking, “What do you want to communicate with the piece, what emotions do you want to evoke, and what is your overall message?”

After the interview, I begin putting the project together by idea mapping with the subject, where I start branching off related topics, ideas, images, etc, to the subject until I can’t think of any more things to map.

My next step is to play word games with the subjects of the idea mapping and try to put things together or think of puns. By the end of my word play, I usually have a few ideas and start to make thumbnail sketches of the ideas I’ve put together.

This continues until I feel like I’ve put the best 3 ideas together, which leads to the final step of bringing the ideas to life via the Adobe Creative Suite and getting the first versions ready to show to the client to figure out the direction the project will take.

Chattanooga CMSA

Clients: Chattanooga Case Management Society of America

Locations: Chattanooga, TN

About: I was asked to create a logo by a former President of the Chattanooga CMSA chapter. The request for the project was that the logo reflect Chattanooga, be simple, stand out, and show professionalism.

For the font, I used a San Serif font to give it a professional feel. I added the Walnut Street bridge element to reflect Chattanooga and symbolize Medical Case Managers coming together to learn and share ideas.

Chattanooga Frisbee League

Clients: Various
Locations: Chattanooga, TN

About: I have played ultimate frisbee in the Chattanooga Flying Disc Club Ultimate League since high school and have had the pleasure of designing various jerseys and logos for a few different teams I’ve played on/captained and for the CFDC itself. I always aim to make the designs fun and that captures the spirit of the game, teams, and the leagues.

Projects (appear in the order listed): Summer League 2021, Winter League 2020, Winter League Team 2019, Winter League Teams 2018

Adelle's Creperie

Client: Adelle’s Creperie
Location: Chattanooga, TN

About: Adelle’s Creperie is a family-owned and operated European-style crepe restaurant in Downtown Chattanooga. The restaurant is named after the owner’s daughter and operates during the day inside The Granfalloon, an event venue owned by the same family.

Projects: The logo features an Eifel Tower A, and cursive to give it the European feel and elegance. The swooping circles with trails represent the spreading of the crepe batter. For the menu, the owners wanted it to feel like a cafe and make sure that it was easy to read. All materials needed to reflect the business and the atmosphere of Adelle’s, which tends to be a laid-back family-friendly, and fun atmosphere.

My involvement with Adelle’s has included creating the logo, menus, event posters, social media event images, and various other signs and materials.

Holocron Solutions, LLC

Clients: Holocron Solutions, LLC

Locations: Nashville, TN

About: Holocron Solutions, LLC was an information and technology company that specialized in web development and online security consultation. I created the logo for the client. They requested the logo be geometric, techy, and intriguing.

I created a hexagon with nodes (circles) on the corners to symbolize web development, technology, and connections for the logo. I used blues and grays to continue to communicate technology and also trust and reliability.

A World Of Differences Academy and Learning Center

Client: Owner
Location: Chattanooga, TN

About: A World Of Differences Academy and Learning Center seeks to help students who perform close to grade level but who may have a difficult time in a traditional school setting due to learning disabilities or other issues.

Projects: The request was to create a logo that communicates education, all-inclusivity, safety, acceptance, and an academy that is student-focused. I used multiple colors to represent being inclusive as well as different subjects in education. The apple represents education with the font representing respect, reliability, and comfort.

Off The Wagon

Clients: Off The Wagon

Locations: Denver, CO

About: Off The Wagon was a bartending/catering service that made alcoholic drinks for events, weddings, parties, etc. The client requested that the logo reflect the roaring 20’s/Great Gatsby style elements, elegance, and fun.

I made sure to reflect the roaring 20’s by using art deco elements throughout the logo. I used a san-serif font as a base and created a custom font based on the art deco style and gave it a fun twist with different breaks in letters, repeating cross strokes (the middle parts of the “f” and “e” and the top of the “t”) as if you had a bit too much to drink. The colors of the navy and gray reflect the elegance of the drinks and cocktails that the company served.
